Hon Hai, Stellantis form joint venture on semiconductors for auto industry

Taipei, June 20 (CNA) Taiwan-based Hon Hai Technology Group announced Tuesday a 50/50 joint venture with automaker Stellantis to establish SiliconAuto, a company dedicated to designing and supplying semiconductors for the automotive industry.

SiliconAuto will tailor chips aimed at a new generation of automotive industry vehicle platforms starting in 2026, Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn globally, said in a news release.

It will provide customers with an auto industry-centric source of semiconductors for the growing number of computer-controlled features and modules, particularly those needed for electric vehicles, it added.

According to Hon Hai, SiliconAuto will support its future semiconductor needs as well as that of Stellantis and other automakers.

"We look forward to a future of extraordinary EV mobility underpinned by the vertical integration capabilities and resources SiliconAuto secures for our partners," Foxconn Chief Product Officer Jerry Hsiao (蕭才祐) was quoted as saying in the release.

"The collaborative energy will propel our customers to become more competitive," Hsiao added.

SiliconAuto will be headquartered in the Netherlands, with its management team to include executives from both founding partners, Hon Hai said.

The joint venture is the product of a December 2021 agreement between Stellantis and Hon Hai to develop a family of semiconductors for automotive applications. In addition to SiliconAuto, the two companies have also set up the Mobile Drive joint venture which focuses on developing smart cockpits enabled by consumer electronics, human-machine interfaces and services.

This is Stellantis' first joint venture with an external partner focused on automotive semiconductor design, an industry expert said, adding that the main base of SiliconAuto's research and development team will be in Taiwan.
